今年の4月2日、池袋にある東京芸術劇場で、イギリスのパブリックスクールの屈指の名門校であるイートン・カレッジと西武文理の交流が行われました。この交流を実現できたことは、学園の教育の原点を振り返り、将来の両校の絆を深めるきっかけとして大きな意義をもつものであります。
文理佐藤学園の礎が築かれてから４０有余年が経ちます。多方面の方々に支えられ、励まされ育てていただいたのが今日の学園です。私は、学園創立を構想し始めた頃より、次代を担うリーダーの育成の手本としてイギリス屈指の進学校であるイートン・カレッジに代表される名門パブリックスクールのもつ長所を生かした進学校を日本につくることを心に誓い、研究しました。そしてのちに文理高等学校、文理中学校、文理小学校を創設しました。
イギリスのパブリックスクールには、生徒一人ひとりに、高い知性と品性を求めるエリート教育とジェントルマン教育の永い歴史と伝統があります。本学園は、ホスピタリティの精神を基調にすえ、将来人々や社会のために奉仕する品性を備えた人材の養成を目指す“レディー＆ジェントルマン教育”を実践しています。また、将来への“高き志”をもち高い知性を磨き、道徳性を備え、自由と規律の精神をもち、心身の鍛練と公正を重んずる人材の養成をはかる“エリート教育”を実践しています。これは、学園が国家、社会、国際舞台で活躍する高い知性と品性を備えたリーダーを育てることを使命としているからであります。文理が育む「新しいエリート」とは、「何事にも前向きで明るい性格の、高き志をもつチャレンジ精神旺盛な、将来国家や国際社会をリードするような高い知性と品性を備えた選ばれた人」です。
本学園は、世界のトップエリートを育成すべく12年一貫教育を推進し、誇りと高い志をもって精進しています。学園の教育の理想は、“高き志”「やれば できる できる できる できた」であります。今回交流した文理の生徒とイートン・カレッジの生徒が、高い知性と品性を備えた次代を担う両国のリーダーとして成長し、国際舞台の場で再会を果たす日が近い将来やってくるものと確信しています。そのために、文理の生徒諸君が一歩、二歩、「山歩」、大きな飛躍をめざし努力を重ねてくれるものと期待しています。 |

Eton College was founded in 1440 by King Henry Ⅵ. The College originally had 70 King's Schools or ‘Collegers’ who lived in the College and were educated free, and a small number of ‘Oppidans’ whe lived in the town of Eton and paid for their education.
Today it is a seconday school (a ‘high school’ in the America sense) for approximately 1,290 boys between the ages of 13 and 18, all of whom are boarders.
Most of our boys are drawn to Eton from the length and breadth of the United Kingdom, and smaller numbers come from all around the world. Diversity has always been an Eton strength, and the range of nations and home backgrounds represented in the school is considerable.
Over the centuries, styles of teaching, the subject taught and the expectations of society have changed, but the essence of school life has remained as it was described in the mid-nineteenth century by an Eton Master, William Cory-Johnson.
He wrote that at Eton you may acquire a certain amount of knowledge, much of which may be forgotten, although the shadow of lost knowledge at least protects you from many illusions. More important than knowledge, however, is learning the arts and habits which will last for a lifetime. Above all, he concluded, you go to a great school for self-knowledge.
Our primary aim is to encourage each Etonian to be a self-confident, enquiring, tolerant, positive young man, a well-rounded character with an independent mind, an individual who respects the differentness of others. By the time he leaves the school, we want each boy to have that true sense of self-worth which enable him to stand up for himself and for a purpose greater than hiｍself, and, in doing so , to be of value to society.

| I am delighted that Eton College Chapel Choir is returning to Japan. Eton College, founded in 1440, is one of Britain's oldest and best-known public schools. Its choral tradition is one of its great strengths, and this has flourished under Ralph Allwood, the current Director of Music. Large numbers of singers and organists trained at Eton go on to take up choral and organ scholarships at university, and quite a few of these later make a name for themselves as professional musicians. Eton College Chapel Choir is an important part of the UK's proud tradition of church music. I wish the choir every success in bringing this music to a new generation of Japanese audiences. |

イートン・カレッジ聖歌隊が再び日本を訪れることとなり、大変嬉しく思っております。１４４０年に設立されたイートン・カレッジは、イギリスでも最も長い歴史をもつ世界的に有名な名門校です。伝統ある聖歌隊はイートン・カレッジの誇りのひとつであり、ラルフ・オールウッド現音楽監督の指導の下、今日まで栄えています。イートンで歌手やオルガニストとして音楽を学んだ生徒の多くが大学では奨学金を受け、将来的にプロのミュージシャンとして活躍する者も少なくありません。イートン・カレッジ聖歌隊はイギリスの伝統として引き継がれる教会音楽の重要な一部をなしています。日本の若い世代の方々にもこの伝統音楽に触れて戴けるよう、聖歌隊の皆様のご活躍をお祈り申し上げます。

| The Eton College Chapel Choir has been making music for the last 570 years, but it is only in relatively recent times that their music has been heard outside England. The choir's tours overseas, particularly to Japan, have been a great joy to our singers and , we hope, a pleasure to those who listen. Above and beyond music, the understanding of others that comes from such a tour, and the friendships that are made, are a valuable and lasting gift. I would like to thank all those who have helped make this tour possible and, in so doing, help sustain the long tradition of Eton's choral music. |

570年前から続くイートン・カレッジ聖歌隊の音楽活動の歴史の中で、イギリス国外での公演を行うようになったのは比較的最近のことです。そうした海外ツアーの中でも、日本ツアーは、聖歌隊メンバーにとって素晴らしい経験となるだけでなく、日本の皆様にも彼らの歌声をお楽しみ戴ける素晴らしい機会になると期待しております。
ツアーを通じて、ツアーに携わる多くの方々と聖歌隊メンバーとの間に音楽の壁を超えた友情や相互理解が育まれ、やがて生涯の宝となるでしょう。今回のツアーの実現にご尽力戴いた関係者の皆様のおかげをもちまして、イートンの伝統である聖歌隊の音楽活動を今後も維持できることに対し、心よりお礼を申し上げます。

| We are very proud of our choral tradition at Eton, and believe that our present choir is a fine representative of that tradition. We are delighted that once again the choir has the opportunity to sing in Japan. It is wonderful for the boys and those who accompany them to visit a country which shares with us a respect for traditional culture as well as being in the forefront of so much that is best in the modern world. I hope that our many existing friends in Japan enjoy the choir's visit; I am sure many new friendships will be established as a result of the tour. I would like to add my warm thanks to all those who have worked to make the tour a reality. |
